Questions for applicants PDF Print E-mail

What qualifications do I need?

For a pilot you'll need a CPL with an IFR rating. To be a Captain on the DHC-6 300's you'll need your ATPL subjects. We take some pilots with low hours, but other positions require more experience of at least a 1000 P in C.

All our aircraft are fixed wing, currently our fleet consists of these types: C206, C206TU, C208, C210, DHC6-300C, GA8 Airvan. View planes here

Where can I learn to fly?

Most places in NZ have good Aero Clubs or Flying Schools. Some Universities offer flight training which is better suited for those wanting to join the airlines, but ask around and check out the flying rates. There is an Aviation School in Melbourne which MAF recommends. Have a look at this website for info www.bcv.vic.edu.au. We may be able to recommend a training organisation near where you live. Check here for other Training options.

Do you employ female pilots / engineers?

Yes we do, but not many apply as most of the countries where we have our aircraft based are often in quite remote and isolated areas. For engineers and other positions, it’s easier as they are located in the main centres. We also have some single people on staff.

What other positions do you have in your organisation?

There are other positions with MAF apart from just Pilots. We need an Accountant, Avionic's / Radio engineer, IT specialist, a Manager with experience in Marketing, Promotions or Fund raising. We could have a position just made for you. Most positions are overseas based, but we do need skilled people in NZ to provide the support base for those serving overseas.

Is the work paid or voluntary?

All our staff receive a living allowance with housing and a number of other benefits. Staff are required to raise personal support as many of the areas where we operate are not commercially viable, so financial support is essential. Contact us for more details.

Why do I need to do a year at a Bible College?

The time at a suitable Bible College is important to prepare you to be able to relate the Bible and your Faith to those with a very different world view. Most people really appreciate the time there and lessons learnt. Spiritual maturity is essential - that is - knowing what you believe and why!

Can I choose which Bible College to go to?

We recommend several Colleges because of the courses they run. But if you have one in mind, we're open to considering what they offer in terms of Mission and Biblical studies.

I've completed a DTS with another Mission. Is this OK instead of a Bible College?

A 6 months DTS with 6 months practical is usually very good preparation and exposure to missions. The requirement is a years study or equivalent, so a DTS is usually okay.

Are there other Mission organisations that have an aviation department?

Yes. Check out the websites listed under other Mission or Training Organisations here . MAF is the largest and serves a large number of different Missions. There are several other Mission / Church groups that operate aircraft very effectively, but mainly for their respective organisation.

Do you have any flying positions here in NZ?

No. All our staff are seconded overseas.

Where do most of your staff work?

The NZ staff who are working overseas, are located in one of the following countries: Australia (Arnhem Land, Mareeba, Cairns), Papua New Guinea, Africa (Madagascar, Kenya, Sudan) and Aceh.
